[Chronic renal disease. Primary care identification]
Abstract
The prevalence of chronic kidney in the general population disease is increasing. The primary care physician can detect the first stage of chronic renal disease and can delay the progression to kidney failure. He can give special attention to patients with hypertension or with diabetes, or more than 60-year old, or with a familial history of chronic renal disease or with recurrent urinary infections. The detection of chronic renal disease can be done by measurement of the renal function (MDRD, Cockroft-Gault), by measurement of blood pressure and by detection of proteinuria. The treatment goals of chronic renal disease are defined after referral to a nephrologist.
