Insulin and growth factors (GF) signal through the insulin receptor and its substrate (IRS1), whereas resistance exercise bypasses this receptor and activates protein kinase B (PKB)/akt independently of the insulin receptor. In both cases, the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is activated leading to protein synthesis via the protooncogene myc, the liberation of eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) 4E from its repressor the eIF4E binding protein (4E-BP), and the activation of the 70 kDa ribosomal S6 kinase (S6K1).
