The quest to conquer age-related macular degeneration
Abstract
AMD causes irreversible blindness in the elderly. For years, treatment has been non-existent or ineffective. With the advent of anti-VEGF agents, ophthalmologists can stabilize and even improve visual function in these patients. To accomplish this, however, requires frequent intraocular injections and follow-up, costly in time and money to the patient and the health-care system. In the near future, it is likely that newer strategies and newer drugs will make the treatment of AMD easier, more effective, and more affordable.
