Abstract
Basing on political and demographic statistics, the author comments on the health system in the former GDR. The public health service is given special attention. A comparison between the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany and the former GDR shows common features and differences in principle. The author tries to explain the structural changes of the public health service before and after the reunification and the establishment of Public Health offices in the new laender. Special reference is made to the development in the federal land of Brandenburg.
