Lay midwives in Oklahoma
Abstract
Since the 1970s a trend towards home birth has sparked a strident debate among obstetric practices and lay midwives which concerns the most valuable member of our society: newborn infants. This paper focuses specifically on lay midwives. Their situation in the country as a whole and in Oklahoma in particular is discussed. The state has ignored the existence of these practitioners, forcing the medical establishment to deal with the consequences of unsafe deliveries.
