Northern blot showing detection of the same size transcript with D9 and D10 probes. D9 and D10 were previously characterized as early and late genes, respectively (5), but both were designated as immediate–early by Assarsson et al. (1). RNA made at 2 h after mock infection (M) or VACV infection in the presence (+) or absence (−) of cytosine arabinoside (AraC) was detected with 32P-labeled D9 (A) and D10 (B) polyribonucleotide probes. The position of a 1,000-nucleotide RNA marker is shown on the side. The same size transcript was detected with the two probes because the transcription termination signal (T5NT) of ORF D9 occurs within the downstream D10 ORF.
