Social networks and health inequalities: evidence for working with disadvantaged groups

Abstract

This paper examines the growing body of research that identifies links between poverty and ill health, and the evidence that social factors do affect health. Epidemiological studies clearly demonstrate links between inequality, poor social networks and ill health. This paper critically examines these core public health concepts and provides a way for practitioners to demonstrate to managers and commissioners that community work which aims to build social networks and address health inequalities should be properly funded. In terms of practice, there is evidence that there is still a lot of work that can be undertaken at a local level that can help to address issues of social isolation and promote social networks. Epidemiological evidence can be used by community practitioners to identify public health work at a local level and to demonstrate the worth of existing local projects.
