Figures

FIG. 1.
FIG. 1.
Nonrandom distribution of glucagons-positive cells in human islets. In normal adult human pancreas, there is a nonrandom distribution of glucagon cells (brown) similar to that seen in rodents. In some small islets, glucagon cells form a mantle around a core of β-cells while larger islets seemed composed of irregular subunits of mantle-core organization. Immunoperoxidase staining for glucagon (brown); hematoxylin. Magnification bar = 50 um. (Please see http://dx.doi.org/10.2337/db07-1842 for a high-quality digital representation of this figure.)
FIG. 2.
FIG. 2.
Amyloid deposits along the islet capillaries. In islets with severe amyloid deposits such as this one, there is a loss of insulin-positive (brown) β-cells and a distorted islet structure. Immunoperoxidase staining for insulin (brown); hematoxylin. Magnification bar = 25 um. (Please see http://dx.doi.org/10.2337/db07-1842 for a high-quality digital representation of this figure.)
