With his publication of ‘Die Cellularpathologie in ihrer Begruendung auf physiologische und pathologische Gewebelehre‘ in 1859, Rudolf Virchow (1821–1902) originated the idea that each cell in each living organism, both plant and animal, originates from another cell and that the origin of disease can only be located in the cell. This book is widely believed to have laid the foundations for cell pathology as a scientific discipline.
