Abstract

Possible mechanisms of peculiarities in the population distribution of idiopathic and symptomatic epilepsy are analyzed. The insufficiency of inhibition systems in the prefrontal cortex due to the later maturation in children and progressive involution in old age is a basic mechanism of idiopathic epilepsy. This factor explains the therapeutic resistance to antiepileptic drugs in the old age. Cerebrovascular diseases are the main factor of symptomatic epilepsy that has a benign prognosis in aged people.
