Continuous mixed venous oxygen saturation monitoring as a patient assessment tool
Abstract
The measurement of continuous mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) monitoring demonstrates the interaction between oxygen supply and demand. This paper will firstly, examine the methods used to monitor continuous SvO2. Secondly, by utilizing a modified Fick equation, the pathophysiology of oxygen supply/demand dynamics in relation to SvO2 monitoring will be discussed. Finally, the author will attempt to elucidate the clinical significance of SvO2 monitoring in the critical care environment.
