There are a few promising projects at early-stage discovery and clinical stages; however, the high attrition rate of the pipeline means that only one in ten compounds will be progressed from discovery into preclinical testing; and in late stages, only one in every five drugs that enter clinical trials becomes available to patients. Success rate based on estimates from Nwaka et al. 2003 .
