Medical response to nuclear and radiation accidents

R P Gale et al. Occup Med. 1991 Oct-Dec.

Abstract

The authors discuss the several strategies for treating bone marrow suppression caused by exposure to acute high-dose total body radiation. Supportive measures prevent death from infection and/or bleeding and thereby permit autologous bone marrow recovery. Another approach stimulates bone marrow recovery using molecularly cloned hematopoietic growth factors. A third approach replaces the damaged bone marrow via a transplant, either permanently or temporarily.
