Expanded scribe role boosts staff morale

Abstract

An expanded scribe role model, being used at a number of EDs including those at Provina Kankakee St. Mary's Hospital and Genesis Allini Quad Cities has positively affected the morale of physicians and nurses. Here are some of the key aspects of the model: The scribes document a wide range of activities, including assessment, diagnostics, procedures, and re-examinations. Scribes also are available to assist nurses with activities such as phone calls and tracking down labs and other key results. The scribes receive extensive initial training in histories and physicals, and how to listen to the physicians and comprehend and document what they say.
