Rhinoplasty: a hands-on training module

Ghassan Zabaneh et al. Plast Reconstr Surg. 2009 Sep.

Abstract

Background: Rhinoplasty is a complex surgical procedure with a steep learning curve and a small margin for error. The authors present a hands-on, anatomically correct, silicone training model designed specifically for learning the technical aspects of rhinoplasty.

Method: Computed tomographic data were acquired and used to create a plaster mold. Silicone was cast into this mold to create an operable, realistic, three-dimensional silicone model.

Results: The prototype created an anatomically accurate rhinoplasty training model. The silicone materials simulate the properties and behavior of the anatomical structures of the nose.

Conclusion: A realistic three-dimensional silicone nasal model has the potential to be used as a hands-on training module for learning rhinoplasty and assessing surgical competency.
