Mitochondrial proteomics and its application in biomedical research
Abstract
Mitochondria are essential organelles that play key roles in a number of cellular processes. Therefore, it is not surprising that DNA mutations and mitochondrial protein dysfunctions have been associated with several diseases, aging and tumorigenic processes. To date, proteomic strategies have increased our knowledge about the functions of mitochondrial proteins. The use of proteomics technology will be essential to expand the analysis of mitochondrial protein dysfunctions and their pathogenic features. This review will focus on the state-of-art proteomic strategies in mitochondrial research, and their application to biomedicine.
