Abstract

By combining PCR amplification of toxin-encoding genes and sic gene sequencing, we distinguished 24 genotypes among 47 M/emm1 group A streptococci isolated from children and adults in France in 9 cases of infection comprising four clusters and 38 unrelated invasive infection cases used as controls.

Dendrogram constructed by ClustalW alignment of 47 M1 GAS sic gene sequences spanning base 40 to base 974 of the GenBank reference sequence gi7620840 for allele sic1.02. (The lengths of the sequences range from 811 bp for strain SP423 to 1,006 bp for strain SP117.) For each strain designated “SP” followed by a number, the presence of toxin genes speA and/or speC is indicated. Alleles of the sic gene are given if listed in GenBank or are designated sicND (not determined) followed by the number of the closest allele match, as explained in the text. The four clinical clusters are indicated. Cluster D was due to two genetically related strains (SP410 and SP412) and a strain belonging to another genotype (SP440).
