The building blocks of DNA are the nucleotides, adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) and cytosine (C). Base pairs are linked to a sugar phosphate backbone in the DNA strand. The nucleotides form base pairs via hydrogen bonds from two strands of DNA to create the DNA helix. The DNA helix is comprised of two single strands of DNA both with a 5’ and 3’ end that bind in opposite directions. The pairing of base pairs are always as follows: adenine binds with thymine, and guanine binds with cytosine. –

Single Nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), in this example A-T is replaced by G-C, thus creating two potential forms or alleles at this site.
