Glaucoma in Latinos/Hispanics
Abstract
Purpose of review: Large differences exist in the prevalence of glaucoma among different racial and ethnic groups. The purpose of this article is to review the findings of the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES) with respect to the prevalence of glaucoma in Latinos and to identify factors associated with the development of glaucoma in this population.
Recent findings: LALES is the largest prevalence survey of eye disease in Latinos of Mexican origin to date. This review discusses the findings of LALES, including data that demonstrate specific risk factors and manifestations of open-angle glaucoma in this rapidly growing population.
Summary: The LALES data on ocular disease among Latinos of Mexican ancestry have crucial implications for effective clinical and public-health interventions. Understanding the particular characteristics of glaucoma in the Latino population is essential for correct diagnosis and management of this potentially blinding condition.
