(A) The hexa-flake is a fractal that is built recursively from smaller and smaller hexagonal patterns. Four levels of self-similarity are present in this illustration. (B) The Hilbert curve is a fractal that is built recursively from a bilobed pattern. The self-similarity is only evident in the construction of this fractal (see the second website below). In the limit, the hexa-flake has a fractal dimension of d=1.77, indicating that it partially fills the plane, while the Hilbert curve has d=2, indicating that it completely fills the plane.
