The PWL2 effector protein undergoes translocation to the rice cytoplasm and then movement into adjoining rice cells. Nuclear-targeted PWL2:mCherry (red) occurs in BICs (arrows) and in the nuclei of both invaded host cells and of neighboring cells. The green signal represents eGFP-tagged BAS4, an IH-outlining protein that is not translocated into the plant cell. This confocal projection is an overlay of bright-field, mCherry, and eGFP. Yellow indicates colocalization of eGFP and mCherry. Bar = 10 μm.
