Number of original research reports using CR published between 1986 and 2009. Census was collected from a PubMed search using the key words “calorie restriction or dietary restriction and aging.” Reviews, commentaries, and studies emphasizing obesity in humans were excluded from the count. Note that the number of publications in the 4-y period of 2006–2009 is just slightly less than the total number of papers published in the 15-y period between 1986 and 2000.
