Pregnancy is a “stress test” that can reveal subclinical trajectories and identify new opportunities for chronic disease prevention (adapted with permission from Sattar N and Greer I, BMJ 2002;325:157–160). 1A. Women at high risk of future cardiovascular disease are identifiable during pregnancy, at which point subclinical vascular risk may become clinically evident 1B. The risk revealed by pregnancy can be used to target high-risk women for screening and early intervention by lifestyle modification and treatment, altering their chronic disease trajectories as they enter middle age
