Diversity: a hallmark of monocyte society
Abstract
Murine "inflammatory" and "patrolling" monocytes have specific functional specializations. In this issue of Immunity, Cros et al. (2010) characterize CD14(+) and CD14(dim)CD16(+) monocyte subpopulations as the human "inflammatory" and "patrolling" monocytes that, similarly to their mouse counterparts, are characterized by distinct functional properties.
