Coupled flows of ions and water across the basal membrane via NKCC1 avoids the necessity of raising cytosolic tonicity to generate fluid influx across the basal membrane following initiation of fluid and electrolyte secretion across the apical and absorption across the basal membranes. Otherwise a rise in cytosolic tonicity would retard fluid secretion by reducing water efflux across the apical membrane via AQP5.
