What is wrong with replacement series?
Abstract
Replacement series methods have been widely used in studies of plant competition. Recent work suggests that they are usually inadequate to assess competitive interactions and can be misleading. Response models relating yield per individual to the densities of the component species provide a methodology for answering many questions about mixtures and also focus attention on the need for clarity in defining terminology and interpreting results.
