Models for subcellular protein localization in E. coli. (A) Traditionally, proteins (blue) have been thought to harbor all the information that is required to localize at their proper destination (yellow), while the mRNA (black) serves only as a template for protein synthesis by the ribosome (red). (B) Nevo-Dinur et al. now report that mRNAs encoding localizing proteins can localize to the proper destination independent of the ribosome or protein synthesis, suggesting that mRNAs can harbor information contributing to proper protein localization.
