5-HT and the immune system
Abstract
The classical neurotransmitter, serotonin (5-HT), plays an important role outside of the central nervous system in immune signaling. Here I review recent studies describing 5-HT uptake in dendritic cells and B lymphocytes, 5-HT synthesis in T lymphocytes, and the role of specific 5-HT receptor subtypes in innate and adaptive immune cells. Furthermore, a recent paper describing the immune phenotype of 5-HT deficient mice is discussed.

A novel form of immune signaling revealed by transmission of the inflammatory mediator serotonin between dendritic cells and t cells. Blood. 2006;107(3):1010–1017. This is the first report of 5-HT uptake in DCs and TPH-1 expression in T cells. In addition, the authors describe Ca2+ dependent exocytosis of 5-HT and the transfer of 5-HT between DCs and T cells. - PMC - PubMed

This paper reveals an important role for the 5-HT7 receptor in activation of naive T cells. In addition, the authors identify 5-HT synthesis in T cells and the regulation of TPH-1 during T cell activation. These data suggest an autocrine function for 5-HT in T cell activation. - PMC - PubMed
