Regulation of the ULK1 complex. A, During nutrient-rich conditions, mTORC1 phosphorylates ULK1, preventing association with AMPK and mATG13, reducing ULK1 kinase activity. PKA is another negative regulator of autophagy that phosphorylates ULK1. B, Following glucose starvation, mTORC1 dissociates from the complex allowing AMPK to bind and phosphorylate ULK1. The autophosphorylation activity of ULK1 increases, and it positively phosphorylates other components of the complex. ATG101 is a mATG13 binding protein that forms a stable complex with ULK1-mATG13-FIP200.,
