Schematic of human embryonic stem cell (hESC) and human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) derivation protocols. (a) ESCs are derived from the inner cell mass (ICM) of the blastocyst, whereas (b) iPSCs can be derived from a variety of somatic cell types using a variety of reprogramming techniques. Commonly used assays to determine the equivalence of hESCs and hiPSCs at the molecular and functional levels are listed in the table on the right.
