Electron microscope images of HCMV particles. a Negative contrast: the surface proteins (glycoproteins) are partially visible on the dilated virus envelope. The contrast medium has penetrated the virus particle (deformation of the lipid envelope) and the nucleocapsid with its subunits can be identified in the interior. b Ultrathin section through a virus particle. Inside the virion, the nucleic acid (DNA) is strongly stained with the contrast medium. The protein layer of the tegument can be identified between the capsid and the virus envelope. The dense edge of the glycoproteins can be seen on the lipid bilayer.
