Excerpt

This Statistical Brief presents data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) on characteristics of ED care for sports injuries among children (patients ages 5 to 17 years) from the 25 states that provided ED and inpatient hospital data to HCUP in 2006. Common reasons for sports-related injury ED visits are examined with a specific focus on understanding which conditions resulted in the child being treated and released from the ED versus admitted to the hospital. Additionally, ED visits for sports-related injuries are examined by age, gender, urban-rural area of residence, and community-level income.
