Pathways to consider when choosing a super-resolution method. Super-resolution microscopy either visualizes ensembles or individual molecules. Within these categories the different technologies require different fluorescent probes. In general there is an inverse relationship between image acquisition speed and image resolution. The key to obtaining a super-resolution image is to understand the trade-offs between probes, speed and resolution. Each of the methods shown is currently available from one or more commercial vendors, and more companies will undoubtedly enter the field.
