Neonatal diagnosis of Fredrickson type II hyperlipoproteinaemia
Abstract
Cord-serum beta-lipoprotein was measured by an immunological method in 303 children. The blood lipids were studied at 7-9 and 14-19 months after birth. The lipids of both parents were measured. Six children were found to have a greater than 2 SD elevation of beta-lipoprotein at birth. Three of these had hypertriglyceridaemia and 3 had type II hyperlipoproteinaemia. The rapid and quantitative measurement of beta-lipoprotein looks promising for screening of type II hyperlipoproteinaemia at birth.
