Castleman disease and associated autoimmune disease

Theresa W Muskardin et al. Curr Opin Rheumatol. 2012 Jan.

Abstract

Purpose of review: Castleman disease can occur in association with autoimmune connective tissue disease and confound the clinical picture, resulting in delayed diagnosis and suboptimal treatment. This review focuses on the intersection of Castleman disease and autoimmunity with an emphasis on shared pathology and mutually beneficial treatments.

Recent findings: Targeting CD-20, interleukin-6, and the nuclear factor-κB pathway has shown promise in achieving long-term remission in patients with Castleman disease and associated autoimmune features.

Summary: Advances in understanding of pathogenic cell types and cytokines in Castleman disease have allowed the development of targeted therapies successful in the treatment of both Castleman disease and associated autoimmune disease.
