Evaluation of a line immunoassay for the differential detection of antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus

R Vranckx. Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis. 1990 Sep.

Abstract

A newly introduced single strip line immunoassay was evaluated as a possible alternative to Western blot for the differential detection of antibodies to multiple HIV-1 and HIV-2 antigens in human serum. In a panel of 153 sera found to be positive twice in currently used screening tests, the line immunoassay and the Western blot detected 44 true positive results. Using Western blot as reference method, the line immunoassay gave 100% specificity and sensitivity. These results suggest that the line immunoassay may be a viable alternative to Western blot.
