Neural network simulations of the nervous system

Abstract

Present knowledge of brain mechanisms is mainly based on anatomical and physiological studies. Such studies are however insufficient to understand the information processing of the brain. The present new focus on neural network studies is the most likely candidate to fill this gap. The present paper reviews some of the history and current status of neural network studies. It signals some of the essential problems for which answers have to be found before substantial progress in the field can be made.
