Gene expression has been compared between planktonic cells and biofilm cells of both A. fumigatus and C. albicans. The major functional categories of genes upregulated in biofilms are summarized in the blue box. The micrographs below show a cryo SEM view of an A. fumigatus biofilm (left; Stephanie Guadagnini, Anne Beauvais, and J.P. Latge, Institut Pasteur, Paris, France) and a scanning EM view of C. albicans in vitro biofilm cells (right; Fanning, Suhan, and Mitchell, unpublished). In both cases, extracellular matrix (ECM) is evident.
