[Chondrosarcoma of the larynx and laryngectomy. Report of 2 cases]
Abstract
Two malignant tumors of cartilaginous origin are presented. Both demonstrated all histologic criteria of chondrosarcomas. Chondrosarcoma of the larynx seem to arise from hyaline cartilage, being the cricoid the mostly involved cartilage. The growth rate is very low, so that the first symptoms, as hoarseness or dyspnea, may be anodyne. The survival rates are directly related to histological grading. Chondrosarcoma are usually of low-grade malignancy. Local growth is predominant, metastarization has been described for high-grade types. Local recurrence may occur even after years. Surgery is the treatment of choice.
