Developmental marker specifying lateral organ boundaries in the maize SAM: homolog of Arabidopsis LIGHT-DEPENDENT SHORT HYPOCOTYLS1 (ALOG*1). ALOG*1 transcripts demarcate the boundary between lateral organs and the developing SAM. In situ hybridizations show ALOG*1 transcript accumulation in proembryo (A), coleoptile stage (B), leaf 1 stage (C), 14-d-old seedling SAM (D), and lateral meristem (E). Bars =100 μm.
