Ethical principles in critical care
Abstract
KIE: Luce applies five principles of medical ethics -- beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, disclosure, and social justice -- to issues that often arise in critical care medicine. These issues include medical decision making, informed consent, resuscitation, brain death and organ donation, withholding or withdrawing life support, and allocation of medical resources. Acknowledging that the nature of the intensive care environment makes applying ethical principles difficult, Luce urges physicians to carry out their obligations to serve the interests of their patients.
