Drinking through the pain

Thomas L Kash et al. Nat Neurosci. 2013 Aug.

Abstract

A feature of abusive alcohol drinking has been modeled successfully in experiments with rats. The experiments show that changes in NMDA signaling in specific neural circuits accompany the transition to aversion-resistant drinking.

Figure 1
Neural circuitry underlying aversion-insensitive alcohol consumption. Long-term access to alcohol leads to upregulation of Grin2c-containing NMDARs at synapses in the NAc by axons coming from insular cortex and mPFC. These receptors are more active at hyperpolarizing currents, leading to altered firing properties of NAc neurons (inset).
