Sources of stem cells for cardiac regeneration and potential reparative mechanisms. Cortical bone stem cells which have been shown to transdifferentiate into adult cardiomyoctes while secreting paracrine factors might be an attractive new class of stem cells. MSCs: mesenchymal stromal cells; BM-MNCs: bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells; AT-MSCs: adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells, HSCs: hematopoietic stem cells; ESC-ECs: embryonic stem cell-derived endothelial cells; iPSC-ECs: induced pluripotent stem cell-derived endothelial cells; ESC-CMs: embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes; iPSC-CMs: induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. Please note that although cardiospheres contain a mixed population of cells other than c-kit+ cells, they are included here as stem cells for brevity.
