Abstract

The contracting muscle has been shown to act as an endocrine organ, secreting "myokines" that participate in tissue crosstalk. In this issue of Cell Metabolism, Roberts et al. (2014) identify BAIBA as a contraction-induced myokine that results in browning of white adipose tissue and increases fat oxidation in the liver.
