Figure 1. The diverse roles of Meis1. In the bone marrow, Meis1 and its cofactors transcriptionally activate Hif-1α and Hif-2α, leading to a reduction in the level of reactive oxygen species and maintenance of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) quiescence (left panel). In the postnatal heart, Meis1 (and perhaps its cofactors Hoxa10, Hoxa11 and Hoxd12) transcriptionally activates CDKIs, thus contributing to the postnatal cell cycle arest of cardiomyocytes (right panel).
