The purpose of this overview is:
- 1Define pancreatitis; 
- 2Review the risk factors and etiologies of recurrent acute pancreatitis / chronic pancreatitis; 
- 3Provide an evaluation strategy to identify the genetic cause of pancreatitis in a proband (when possible); 
- 4Review management of pancreatitis; 
- 5Inform genetic risk assessment and surveillance of at-risk relatives for detection of early treatable manifestations of hereditary pancreatitis.
