[Proper use of novel antidepressants in psychiatric clinical practice]
Abstract
The prescription rates of novel antidepressants have been increasing since their introduction to Japan. However, potential adverse events, including increased suicidality or impulsiveness, have been a social issue. Thus, the proper use of antidepressants is required of psychiatrists. Before prescribing, psychiatrists have to learn clinical guidelines for depression, drug interactions, and adverse effects of antidepressants. In pharmacotherapy for depression, it is essential to inform patients of both the efficacy and adverse effects of antidepressants, and proceed with treatment in collaboration with them.
