Using oligonucleotide-directed site-specific mutagenesis, 2 conserved amino-acid residues could be determined. An arginine at position 33 and a tyrosine at 123 were important in maintaining an antiviral activity of IFNα in 1292 cells infected with encephalomyocarditis virus.
