”Darwinian” tumor suppression model in mice. (a) T cells develop in the thymus from progenitor cells. The thymus is continuously supplied with progenitor cells from the bone marrow, which replace thymus-resident progenitor cells. Martins et al. demonstrated that competition between these cells leads to the death of the thymus-resident progenitors in mice. (b) The authors also reported that an absence of competition, when the supply of bone marrow progenitors is blocked, leads to uncontrolled self-renewal of thymus-resident progenitors and T-cell development, such that tumors form.
