Contraception for women with chronic medical conditions: an evidence-based approach

Abstract

Women of reproductive age with chronic medical conditions are at risk for unplanned pregnancy. If timing for pregnancy is not optimal for these women with medical conditions, they may be at high risk for adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Women with chronic medical conditions are in great need of highly effective contraception. Almost all women, including those with medical conditions, are eligible for at least 1 of the available long-acting reversible contraceptive methods. Health care providers must recognize both the risk for pregnancy and the benefit of highly effective contraception to improve access to these methods, which may decrease unintended pregnancies among women with medical conditions.
